BBC Big Weekend so far

Now heading off towards Phoenix for talk on Another Spring. Could be a news angle on radio.

Meanwhile trying to workout what the BBC is doing with "visual radio" as I remember from Radio 1 visit to Exeter a couple of tears ago. Search seems to show the term is not used so much recently. "Social Broadcasting" seems more frequent. BBC Academy as well as BBC Learning, both show up not sure why.

From last weekend the BBC Devon video from Phoenix seems just to be the short clips on Twitter early the same evening. Not sure why, sold out anyway I think. Should be some sound on radio this evening. Maybe there is an edit still to happen.

I have started a playlist on YouTube for the #mtwr event. Clips from Wild Show on Thursday around Chris Dercon keynote for MOOC on Arts management. I will add more when it seems this start is noticed.

Meanwhile BBC Red Button showing Radio 1 compilation of film interviews. Lots of action stunts and big stars. Good telly as they have the rights to show clips. Probably worked as radio sound anyway. Live music sometime later.

Drop In Friendly, the core schedule

Getting closer to June 9th, time to be clear what is on offer. The building will include much music and story telling so very low chance anyone will spend extended time on management theory. So this post intended to outline the main timings so that anyone can join or leave and have a rough idea where it fits. ( bits in bracket link to possible topics later or somewhere, see previous posts)

12  Start and intro, how to link management theory with problem situation of radio.
Is FM coming to an end? If so, what continues through digital disruption?

12.15   Mic Check

12.30   Possible link with Virtually Connecting, else replay on YouTube from Networked Learning Conference. Comparison with education / radio. Unbundling and Rebundling, is the meaning of this clear? Performers, presenters and content managers what to think? Is it ok to record video at any performance? Is remix always welcome? How to mix print and online for promotion.

(Manager's Guide to Self Development)

1.30   break / getting ready for Standup Philosopher

2.00   Standup Philosopher Talks Education   should academics make claims about practice? is critique a sounder foundation for HE ? is current maths as taught all that useful in everyday life? See earlier version from BikeShed.

sometime later  Mindfulness , Kindness                                                  (Presence)

After 4 the local community radio conference ends. Some will arrive to discuss policy.
Expected conclusion, FM continues but also social media. Tags for event to continue as #mtwr and PhonicFM. More official graphics for online designed with print. Probably starting with Zion Train.

There are people at the conference who may need to catch trains so may arrive earlier. OFCOM is represented but a tweet already informs us that the end of FM is not their decision and they have no comment. Several people also with tech knowledge. So expect the PopUp Centre for Bar Management, Performance and Camera Studies. But not much time for this so continues on Facebook. Management theory also continues online and in the bar during the evening as well as the music.

BBC Introducing Radio Devon at Phoenix continues #visualradio

Quick post to explain several tweet links coming up soon.

Today is BBC Introducing / Radio Devon event at Phoenix Exeter , (same site for Phonic FM event on June 9th.) BBC also promotes another event next weekend.

Couple of years ago the Radio 1 Big Weekend was at Powderham Castle and there was also training at the Phoenix and Seale Hayne. They promoted the idea of "visual radio" , seemed to be a lot like video.

FM audience declining so Live Lounge not only on BBC apps but also YouTube and other social media. If content broken down into clips, might as well be video not just sound.

Problem for Phonic and other low budget radio is how to afford reasonable video production and how to organise around hashtags and rapid posting. To be continued online and discussed in some detail on June 9th.

Meanwhile look for tweets with tags #visualradio and #PhonicFM

Work Foundation location for Management Theory in 2019 #mtwf2019

There is now a solid proposal to organise a one day conference next year to continue the series Management Theory at Work  For new readers, this continues the events in Lancaster and the current version for radio.

The Work Foundation in London is now part of the Lancaster Management School. There is space for about 60 people, intended ratio about 50 : 50 for theory and practice. One day only between about 10 and 4 so travel possible from outside London.

There is a Twitter account - @mtwf2019 - so please follow if you would like updates. There will be a detailed call for papers in October 2018. The tag #mtwf2019 will also be used on other social media. The radio version - #mtwr - has a very loose structure, open agenda and sequence to fit guest availability. So it may seem out of proportion though it can be edited later and contribute to the "call for papers" stage of Management Theory at the Work Foundation.

Later there will be a page on LinkedIn. Currently #mtwr is mostly on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. John Burgoyne has enough followers to have access to video on LinkedIn but we are still exploring how to handle production. There are already several clips on YouTube that continue from his keynote at the first conference. Suggestion is to follow him on LinkedIn and/or @mtwf2019 on Twitter. Updates will be notified later this year.

Quality as explanation

Some of the theory relating to radio and management started as quality ideas. Not just conformity but how systems change to deliver something different. This has mostly come from practice so some academics do not accept the approach. Especially a problem I find when those who study management learning have a look at quality theory.

For example Hugh Wilmott and Adrian Wilkinson in Making Quality Critical seem not to like the way that Edwards Deming and others appear not to relate to other academic theory. I think one explanation for this is that they write about quality for a management audience as if what they suggest could be acted on. So it tends to be more positive than formal descriptions of what mostly happens. Critique takes on capitalism can be more realistic, often convincing.

So Deming on "The New Economics" is none too clear on where quality relates to existing economics. It has to do with what is delivered as product rather than flows of money.

For radio we do not need to look at system failure too much but can consider how other systems develop alongside existing ones. This may be a sensible way of working, existing systems concentrate on their main role as long as it lasts.

Previous post as video sequence

Trying to explain how video may work, basis for future posts on various social media.

Previous post has an edit of descriptions so far. Event intended as an update of two conferences a while ago, #mtw3 finds much and the schedules are on the early posts of this blog. Focus is the situation of radio, maybe moving from FM to social media and becoming video in the process.

Limited budget for video so mostly linking clips. Assume clearance ok to show from online on the day and edit bits for comment later. Lighting is reasonable in the room from daylight.

So something like this

How to relate to Phoenix?

Sample video from local band

Sample video from visiting bands, both for Phonic benefits so promo essential

also Black Tabs , supposed to have visited lat year, may yet, interesting case study.

Discussion on how to link social media / video with print / radio

Standup Philosopher from previous event

Comment on basis for academic theory, how to relate to practice.

Mindfulness

Final two hours to look at FM radio as organisation. Will it come to an end as in no licence? How else to work with social media.

Tech direction may be otherwise. Discovery so far is that Black Tabs concentrate on vinyl. several radio stations will be represented on the day, not sure if they will be at this event. Access All Aerials is strong online, no FM signal. But can they cope with vinyl?

Something like this outline might work in another time and place. Updates expected soonish. Please add comments on suggested links. Or add your comment as video. Eventually there may be an edit of the whole sequence.

Links copied from recent email may help

Starting with Verse from Padcaster. Hope to get one in time. Look on YouTube for examples. Turns a phone into something stable, so you can talk into one with no wobble.
Also can talk into YouTube. If you have a Google account try it out, set to private.
free trial possible
more graphics approach , talk fairly quick having selected graphics

Not sure of the headings yet. Six hours.First column for topics, second for format. People from
other radio stations might arrive about 4 after another event. Third and fourth for books. Most time
for whoever turns up as practice in column one. Possibly some academics on topics in three and
four but not sure. There are about 12 seats so intend to book six and leave six open. Plus overflow
breakout areas in the bar.

Critique definitely booked, Standup Philosopher, also appearing in the story Telling area.
Timings to be worked out but somewhere in the middle.

Another book, The Shape of Engagement, Scott Gould.  Current phase is “scatter” ,
“gather” will be when some guests are confirmed. “Matter” clarified some time after the event.
