Video production back to fairly simple

Still waiting for Verse to be widely available in the UK. Still no sign of YouTube RED in UK. S probably video will continue at low level of production and just stay aware of what else is possible. There are a few things coming long and meanwhile video on Facebook and other places is accepted even though it is mostly a talking head. Could work ok depending on content.

YouTube seems to be getting even more into channels. Playlists now not doing well, guess this is for all not just mine. Rarely shown in suggestions, they prefer their own lists for particular artists. So I am thinking about promotion for some outside YouTube and/ or showing playlists somewhere else.

Blogs could work as a way to do sequences.

Place Shift as Standup Philosopher Talks Education

Video now uploaded from Phoenix Exeter on Saturday, original green screen versions of main talk and Q&A, also shifted with background from garden on Lancaster Spine.

Several issues, should have kept fixed camera as backgound static. Folds in screen show up white. But anyway this is a start on using the Spine Walk as a base for clips from somewhere else.

We did have lighting from Phoenix Digital but thought the daylight was enough.

Previously at the first #mtwr in Bikeshed the Standup Philosopher was much more on topic as I asked for. He covered critique and included a basis for action. This time he was much easier to follow and spoke mostly about maths and exams. There is still an issue about how HE relates to practice. Is it possible that Business Schools include content that is more intended as selection than something useful in practice?

The original Management Theory at Work events did mix action and learning. To be continued.

Print, omnichannel

Just a note to be a reminder, nothing yet on print and omnichannel.

I will come back to this.

So far found that Cross Channel Marketing still being talked about although the shows have stopped and I am not sure even IPEX will continue as the same sort of event.

How to describe the marketing and distribution around radio and records? Radio 1 spoke of "visual radio" when they visited the Phoenix a couple of years ago. then "social broadcasting" to include TV, changing even faster. Maybe "omnichannel" is better as it includes retail, I think. Same word, maybe used slightly differently?

Looking at the academic sites and social media it is sometimes a shock when a book is mentioned and it turns out to be over £100, hardback only or ebook to rent. But maybe print could be a way of income / sponsorship for video? Production costs for video are falling but still needs something.

More later.

Tomorrow I think most of the people at the meeting room, first floor, Phoenix in Exeter will mostly be interested in music performance but there is clear digital disruption around FM so much to discuss that relates to management learning. Mostly we should get  some new video clips but to fill in gaps there will be a selection from an updated playlist, Management Theory at Work in Radio.

One song - Kindness from Ben Glover - to fit with Mindfulness, many clips from John Burgoyne, some duplication but wide range of style in video production, another topic.

Apple view and take on the MOOC. Loops are possible from "visual radio" , a BBC term for video, back to education assuming everywhere is close to a studio of some kind.

Soon there will be a switch to working more on mtwf2019 , Management Theory at the Work Foundation for end 2019. Call for papers probably in October. The time for working on papers will coincide with two shows at ExCEL - BETT and Learning Technologies, so there may be more tech in background.

Hello Creatives

This is a short version of the Management Theory at Work in Radio timings for tomorrow.

Anna Marie Waite will be there about 1pm and suggests the topic "How Do Creatives Share Our Work?" , mostly about music performance and song writing.

Can be just an open question but relates to rights and social media. What is intended, what can be expected. Relates to how radio has used content and how this evolves with social media.

From 12 trying out cameras. There can be a similar discussion about images. Photos of Phonic presenters seem ok to share online an/or include in another photo / video.

2pm Standup Philosopher Talks Education , mostly about maths exams but some on basis of study.

From 4 joined by some from Regional Radio Conference. What follows on from FM? Relates to what creatives seem to want.

At some time as gaps indicate, Mindfulness ( might be part of talk with Anna Marie Waite ) and Kindness, and "Not Taking the Not Given" , not sure what this means but it may be a basis for content sharing.

Space, Place, Exeter Phoenix for Saturday, learning possibility

Blog posts getting shorter as time creeping up, need to check lots of blank space on SD cards and work out what to delete.

But just to mention again that the building now the Phoenix Arts Centre was once a part of a London College or part of the start of University of Exeter or an Art School or School of Printing. Dates to follow sometime.

From 50s it seemed the campus was the main place for research and knowledge. But maybe with the internet there could be a move back to the city. Meanwhile as high street shopping declines all available spaces seem to be student accommodation. Not sure this will last if learning moves online.

But there could be more study in the city. Maybe return to Phoenix even when not on offer for free.

OFCOM and news, Another Spring examples, background chat

Quick notes as time getting scarce.

OFCOM will be at the Phonic event on Saturday, mostly for the Regional Radio Conference but they may drop in on the Management in Radio talks. My guess is that they will not have nmuch to say formally about ending FM or making DAB possible for community stations. seems to be a policy decision at some other level.

But maybe there can be some general discussion about regulation in different media as things change. I have found out that some of the video production in Express and Echo has moved from Exeter to Plymouth. "Plymouth Live" is now the main brand so this could develop as related to Devon Live. it is possible the Express and Echo could become "Exeter Live" in not too far off future. Trinity Mirror has become Reach so this sounds like web analytics talking.

I was surprised that OFCOM was asked to look at the sale of Daily Express. Similar opinions seem to be represented in other UK newspapers. But maybe websites, social video, broadcasting will all become much the same thing.

There have been statements by the new editor, Gary Jones, that previous front pages on Islam made him "uncomfortable". Independent report with video. OFCOM report was expected in May so may be out soon, will show if this is an issue.

The main current art show at Phoenix is "Another Spring" , much of the work based on news photos or actual newspapers. Much discussion possible around mainstream news and social media.

Meanwhile print may be in continuing decline. Can Reach consolidate production? Could the essence of the Express be preserved online? Rupert Bear search finds a fan site.

Exeter Radio #mtwr reverse order to Lancaster Spine Walk

I t just seems to be turning out this way. The meeting between 12 and 2 on Saturday has a sequence to fit with other events. The senior management, minds of the firm, call them what you like, they have another event - a regional conference, till 4. The StandUp Philosopher is part of a storytelling workshop at opening and closing so has chosen to talk on Education at 2. So the first two hours are for a look at available camera / broadcast tech and a discussion about how creatives share what they do. My guess is now that the tech around cameras will just be assumed. Creatives seem to be used to what social media has on offer. Maybe no limits will be obvious.

StandUp Philosopher probably concentrating on maths exams this time but will include a balance on action and critique, my guess. Many examples anyway of video from Widseth and Deor performance so there is some basis for this.

Any talk about a business model will be at the end when the regional conference is over. Probably production budgets will be limited so tech options need study then. To be continued later, maybe at Seale Hayne or Tech Exeter or online.

Previously I had thought about the sequence as related to a walk along Spine on Lancaster campus. Start with tech at InfoLab 21, critique as business plan at management school, observe in public space near library and bookshop. Then study as art / social science. The Standup Philosopher would be somewhere far along by now, such as where the Time Making Garden was once. Now another sort of garden but maybe better as a small theatre. Could be settled planting by next summer. Meanwhile will green screen in Exeter.

So if you are following online or from Lancaster, suggest trying the walk in reverse order. May fit better with #mtwr . There will be a tweet version, maybe some stills. Video may wait on editing , not sure.

Could be sensible anyway, even going back to original direction is an option.

Photography. Image Rights, examples #PhonicFM Another Spring #visiblegirls

This is an expanded tweet rally, and to link several graphics.

Just uploaded tweets of the captions for photos of Phonic FM presenters. Show in corridor at back of bar in Phoenix Exeter. Last week we did a quick report by phone on the Wild Show. Chris Norton surely is allowed to be in a video with his image in background? But I am still not sure about doing video interviews with art in view in a gallery. Not as well accepted as video of music performance, at least so far.

So we need an update on the video interviews in front of the photos and comment on what is though to be allowed.

Still on topic more or less, main question for creatives on June 9th will be what they think about how work is shared, sampling free download etc as a convention and as promotion. What is a radio presenter supposed to do? and / or social media collage  messing about?

There was not time enough to arrange an interview with Jean Wainwright but I did take some stills. see previous posts, probably more links later.

I have noticed some of the images from Another Spring turn upin tweets. Will try to find these again.

Previously I visited Visible Girls, photos of music fans with updates, with my friend JD. We added some record sleeve images to the teenage bedroom and also were tempted to appropriate the hat. But later bought another one, so probably stayed within limits for gallery manners.

Pops Up Again - Centre For Bar Management, Performance and Camera Studies

This exists mostly as a Facebook group that is activated every so often. Graphics mostly from Seale Hayne as the most solid effort was around two Music and beer Festivals, sadly not continued. For about ten years it has been possible to do some sort of video with fairly cheap equipment if the performers do not mind and the audience can accept the production standards.

There is a case that the video may get enough views to promote the next event, the venue or the music. Could a venue be persuaded to invest in video? Could be just positions for a good line of sight. Or sound direct from the desk. this has happened on occasions but still quite variable. Exeter often relies on video from other locations.

Camera Studies because the technology keeps changing, often getting cheaper or more capable.

Jo Gedrych did some early tests with Exeter TV and some YouTube clips. He has made a study of local cable TV in the USA and is a Visiting Fellow for the Centre. However he now lives in the USA so rarely visits Exeter. He may have some ideas though.

Exeter City Council are thinking about a major venue. Camera positions could be part of the design. Even build some cameras into the ceiling with a remote control. When there is a budget for the building some cameras may seem a reasonable extra.

Meanwhile most likely that cheaper cameras will be the option. At BETT this year there was a version of Padcaster for mobile phones, a rig that connected to a  tripod, lights etc. Known as a Verse but not in UK yet. Any clues welcome, online or on June 9th.

More On Discussion For Creatives - How We Share Our Work

See previous post following my talk with Anna Marie Waite, bit more shape to the event.

This topic ( 1 pm ) to concentrate on situation of  creatives in changing circumstances. ( Includes presenters and video makers etc but starts with singer songwriter).

Previously Anna has been a presenter on Phonic FM and helped to organise Wonderful Women Sing, a Phonic benefit in the Voodoo Lounge. This was an occasion I worked with Chris Norton and Jon Mahy on some video that became a playlist.

The performers were happy for this to be uploaded in full. But what to think? Is this normal? Opinions vary and also it is not obvious how to improve production values without some income. ( May be going back to management issues here, will stay on  how creatives think about this sort of thing.

When promotion was mostly through FM it was ok for radio to play some tracks. Now all content may be available free in some form.

Previously my video of Spin 2 in Sidmouth. They will be in the Voodoo Lounge about the same time as this discussion but do drop by later, it may be on repeat.

continues next post on the PopUp Centre for Bar Management, Performance and Camera Studies.

Outline Update, even easier to drop in and drop out

Timing and issues more clear, study this post and it will be much easier to join this pace or leave it and still have a rough idea where the discussion is at.

Anna Marie Waite has suggested the name and reference to Management may not interest some people so suggests topic at 1pm

Discussion for Creatives -  How We Share Our Work

Covers ways songs and performance are promoted and streamed or sold. What is happening now and how to influence this. I relate this to ideas about Creative Commons and also Content Marketing. More on this in next post.

Between 12 and 1 an intro and look at cameras / ways to record and broadcast online. Some prerecorded video / sound but try for new content.  Links online to the PopUp Centre for Bar Management, Performance and Camera Studies. Not sure how much of the discussion with Creatives will be recorded /  broadcast.

2pm Standup Philosopher Talks Education  , basis for further study.

4pm onwards Joined by people from Regional Community Radio event, possibly including news from OFCOM.

Questions and answers may just stay the same. What happens to radio if FM is ended. Do creatives welcome social media? Discussion can start online any time soon, no need to wait for Saturday.

Maybe FM radio just continues and OFCOM has no comment. But do check blog after Saturday or drop in during the day.

PS "management" still part of the discussion, what sort of structure supports whatever approach the creatives seem to want?
