Previous post as video sequence

Trying to explain how video may work, basis for future posts on various social media.

Previous post has an edit of descriptions so far. Event intended as an update of two conferences a while ago, #mtw3 finds much and the schedules are on the early posts of this blog. Focus is the situation of radio, maybe moving from FM to social media and becoming video in the process.

Limited budget for video so mostly linking clips. Assume clearance ok to show from online on the day and edit bits for comment later. Lighting is reasonable in the room from daylight.

So something like this

How to relate to Phoenix?

Sample video from local band

Sample video from visiting bands, both for Phonic benefits so promo essential

also Black Tabs , supposed to have visited lat year, may yet, interesting case study.

Discussion on how to link social media / video with print / radio

Standup Philosopher from previous event

Comment on basis for academic theory, how to relate to practice.

Mindfulness

Final two hours to look at FM radio as organisation. Will it come to an end as in no licence? How else to work with social media.

Tech direction may be otherwise. Discovery so far is that Black Tabs concentrate on vinyl. several radio stations will be represented on the day, not sure if they will be at this event. Access All Aerials is strong online, no FM signal. But can they cope with vinyl?

Something like this outline might work in another time and place. Updates expected soonish. Please add comments on suggested links. Or add your comment as video. Eventually there may be an edit of the whole sequence.

Links copied from recent email may help

Starting with Verse from Padcaster. Hope to get one in time. Look on YouTube for examples. Turns a phone into something stable, so you can talk into one with no wobble.
Also can talk into YouTube. If you have a Google account try it out, set to private.
free trial possible
more graphics approach , talk fairly quick having selected graphics

Revised Notes on Management Theory at Work in Radio

Management Theory at Work in Radio

(copied from Google doc )

Continues academic conferences on Lancaster campus. Now focus on how will FM survive
digital disruption? How to mix marketing with print and social media? The Standup Philosopher
central on how to balance critique and action. Is visual radio just low budget video? Cost reduction
possible with tech options from BETT and Learning Technologies.

Not sure of the headings yet. Six hours.First column for topics, second for format. People from
other radio stations might arrive about 4 after another event. Third and fourth for books. Most time
for whoever turns up as practice in column one. Possibly some academics on topics in three and
four but not sure. There are about 12 seats so intend to book six and leave six open. Plus overflow
breakout areas in the bar.

Critique definitely booked, Standup Philosopher, also appearing in the story Telling area.
Timings to be worked out but somewhere in the middle.

Another book, The Shape of Engagement, Scott Gould.  Current phase is “scatter” ,
“gather” will be when some guests are confirmed. “Matter” clarified some time after the event.

Sunday 15 April 2018

Outline of main sequence ( version mid April )

Now confirmed the Standup Philosopher at about 2pm ( visiting from Story Telling in the Workshop)
He will include a take on Maths as it is taught in schools, influence of universities on the requirements. Also as previously the dilemmas around theory and practice.

Central section also includes Mindfulness / Compassion. No speaker confirmed but sound and video available.

The two hours before this mostly about performance and promotion, radio and whatever else it becomes. So radio can play a free CD. Do performers welcome fan video. Is funded video available? How to promote it?  Case study around Black Tabs from Austin, Texas. So far we know they prefer vinyl to CD. Why? ( Not the tech future expected btw) Possibly someone from label present but other guests welcome, performers and presenters.

Also role of print in promotion. Can social media be effective on a smaller budget? How to combine? Promo of #tags in print. Probable speaker but no confirmed time.

Community Radio Regional Conference in cinema ends about 4 so soon after this some may join. So scope can shift to organisation level, not just operations. Not sure how much open discussion is possible on current issues but may include digital disruption, end of FM etc. Meanwhile a visit to Seale Hayne is planned to propose they change to cope with vinyl. Report will be available.

Much technology to consider. See posts on the PopUp Centre for Performance, Bar Management and Camera Studies. Continues on Facebook. Mostly about forms of camera. Strong chance that info available on Verse from Padcaster. No timings for this, just pops up.

Must end at 6 but may continue in bar as some problem situations are not easy to make public.
Else assumed ok for broadcast. Sound and video recording, trials of streaming.

============

Management Theory also pops up. Loop of description of the first two Management Theory at Work events. Learning Company / Organization as described around turn of century updated for tech. Compare situation of sound / music / radio with campus / MOOC / academic publishing. this could get to be a large topic so some will carry over to a future event without the radio focus. ( Situation with Futurelearn and OU is enough of a news item to take a whole day but will be considered briefly just to explore the comparison with radio / sound )

Moving main Futurelearn posts to Hello Spiders

I realise I may get out of proportion on Futurelearn so will do more on this in the Hello Spiders blog. I keep getting lost about the proper role of radio presenter, trying to be calm and objective , or at least open to views from guests.

I have been following tweets quite carefully since Peter Horrocks resigned. There seems to be very little awareness around Futurelearn for those demanding that he go. So there is a lot to discuss here, probably too much in proportion.

Next post another try at an outline.

Sound clips from Wild Show re #Futurelearn and #OU and tags #vogue80

Things moving too quickly to do all the editing required. Also the chat makes more sense in the context of the shows. This will end up as radio, not just an event.

So here is Wild Show from yesterday

Listen to "2018-04-12 - the wild show" on Spreaker.

Please scroll forward to 7.43 then listen till   18.33    This is about Futurelearn, OU, Peter Horrocks. Talking to my friend JD it soon becomes clear we knowe very little about what we talk about. Guests very welcome.

Recent news, Peter Horrocks has resigned. More later.   Guardian  BBC

Then   23 to 26 for chat about #tags . Chris Norton is sort of on Twitter but mostly as automated from Facebook. I have started a #vogue80 tag for JD's 80s Vogueing Show. Efforts at transformation concentrate for now on expanding his scope into the 70s and 90s. Also Seale Hayne may invest in resources for vinyl once he becomes convinced of the need. ( CD for 80s only seems about right )

In theory #tags could be enough to promote online music and sell tickets for events. Actually print still needed and can work with #tags. Topic for early phase of Management theory at Work in Radio.

Futurelearn, OU and Daily Mail

Unusual for me to look to the Daily Mail for guidance but I have bought a copy today. Front page backing Open University, spills over two pages, plus editorial. So expanding on posts for the Radio event as some issues may turn out to be related.

First some notes from the paper, then some info about Futurelearn.

OU problems traced to government policy on fees , 28% fall in student numbers from 2011 -2016, estimate of 600,000 over the period. Change in policy supported by Lord Willetts, minister at the time of the decision, Support also from Robert Halfon MP - OU "the most important educational institution in our country". He is chair of the Education Select Committee.

Vote today on confidence in vice-chancellor Peter Horrocks. Criticism of £100m cuts from £420m budget. £50m to expand digital ( I have also heard that £70m is for digital ) Ross Clark commentary mentions Horrocks lecture on the traditional "Fortress University" and aim to evolve into "University  our working ivesof the Cloud". Ross Clark supports a vision of university education "we dip in and out of through our working lives - not something to tuck under our belts before we even get our first job."

Futurelearn is not mentioned as such though Ross Clark says that Horrocks wants to move quickly "before American universities team up with social media sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn" taking business from UK. This is where I can add something from previous posts.

The MOOC has not been well reported in UK press. A bit of mocking to start with but not much recently. The trend as been towards more vocational topics and some monetised certificates. Degrees are now available. See reports from Class Central.

There is much more global joint working than just USA / UK competition. Futurelearn has courses from USA universities. London courses on Coursera, Oxford on EdX.

LinkedIn Learning already exists. Content not exactly branded as from a specific university. They were at Learning Technologies in Olympia as were O'Reilly, now moving beyond online book subs to video and support. Coursera wanted to meet companies as they develop content to meet skills required. They work with research on AI etc. So the model of continuing education fits with people who need to upgrade and maintain knowledge.

So far the OU has funded Futurelearn out of existing budget. No government subsidy, no venture capital, very little media support. A talk at South by SouthWest from Class Central suggested some numbers on income expected as MOOC platforms start to promote degrees. No info on Futurelean but maybe print journalists could do some investigation?

Spotify recently valued at over $20b while still in loss. How to value the MOOC platform? They also have a lot of audience paying nothing and a proportion subscribing or paying for a course. Education not as massive as music but can be more expensive.

Based on Class Central reports Futurelearn may be in the top 5 or top 10 including non English language. Looking at history of music streaming things can change. But Futurelearn could be an asset sometime soon with support. Bit vague but this draft.

Note for editors, OhnmNews style assumes a range of other reports more or less similar and quickly updated.

By the way, some form of learning happens on Facebook. Might be called "user experience". Research needed.

Lectures from Durham IAS turn up on YouTube but with a delay. Recent one on science funding shows business studies on topic for HE.

June 9th meeting Management Theory at Work in Radio , looking at digital disruption in radio, compare education.

Futurelearn in a sort of OhmyNews style

Draft story on OU and Futurelearn in a sort of OhmyNews style

Something will happen with OU and / or Futurelearn to provide a hard news event.
When I sent in stories for the English version of OhmyNews a while ago it often
happened that the news aspect was not interesting enough so I had to copy and paste
my rave / opinions from the end into another story later. Could be the same situation.
Then I just did more blog pasts and copied that in. Now I am working on an event about
Management Theory in Radio , June 9th in Exeter, based on Phonic FM. There is a lot
of academic theory about digital disruption but not much point in just looking at radio
without the campus also.

The Open University owns Futurelearn, still losing money, and Peter Horrocks is under
pressure to change a policy of cuts to cover shortfall and expand digital. Unclear what the
trend is on income but Class Central has reported some guess at numbers for Coursera and others.

So far I have done some blog posts

Meetings of Council and Senate soon may be news. Stories on BBC so far no mention of Futurelearn.

Now twittering finds more.

Clearcut YouTube  attack on Futurelearn as a massive cash disaster

Several tweets from Lynne ( @bld2013 ) with useful history about UK eUniversity ,

This shows that money can be lost but they all seem to be around the time of the first cybercrash.
Things may have changed with the MOOC scene. Class Central has several reports on trend to
monetised certificate including degrees. Recent talk at South By SouthWest includes speculation
on numbers for income. USA only, no clues on Futurelearn.
Also Coursera and others are working with corporates on skills in demand for growth tech. Maybe some academics do not approve of such concerns. To be continued.
UK may not be the best location either for such input. Again , something to check.

Also from Twitter, link to new book about Online Learning. There may be reservations about MOOC etc. ,
not sure. Hope to find clues on content, bit expensive and not out yet.

Links welcome to related stories. Please use any of this if it fits. Now trying to find OhmyNews.

Argument around Futurelearn

In another blog I have made a case for Futurelearn, claiming it has some value in business terms. Not much mentioned in current reporting on OU cuts. I will talk some about thios at the beginning of the event on June 9th. Mention of "digital transformation" relates to situation of radio.

Yes it may all sound like management speak but it will become clear. Radio requires fairly quick statements, rambling blog is just preparation.

Over the next few weeks there should be more info available. Class Central, source of the talk at South by Southwest mentioned in previous posts, has an update on Udacity. They have new courses on AI etc. There is scope for more support for Futurelearn in the UK.

Class Central talk about "business and tech" as the sort of areas where course certificates are in demand. How to relate to "Mode 2" , the term that academics use for some knowledge outside the established disciplines. Suggestions welcome.
